What is SCIP Panels?

SCIP panels, or structural concrete insulated panels, are a modern building material designed to be lightweight, thermal insulated, and resistant to sound and fire. They are composed of a core of expanded polystyrene(EPS) sandwiched between two layers of reinforced concrete, 2mm to 3mm diameter wire mesh between them, and a diagonal truss connector.

Insufficient Strength of Concrete

This issue can be caused by inadequate water-to-cement ratio, thin concrete layers, and insulators that are not strong enough. Too much water in the mix makes concrete more porous and weakens the bond between particles. Also, SCIP panels always have thin layers of reinforced concrete (typically 25–50 mm or 1–2 inches). One strategy is to increase its thickness to achieve higher load capacities, but with that comes a higher cost and construction volume.

Premature Loss of Workability

In SCIP panel production, concrete is often placed over large surface areas, leading to delamination and slump loss. If the mix loses slump too quickly, it becomes stiff and hard to handle, making it challenging to apply evenly to the EPS core. It could also cause air pockets or voids, especially in the corners of the whole structure.

Cracking in Concrete Layers

The thin reinforced concrete layers in SCIP Panels can develop cracks due to shrinkage, thermal expansion, or improper curing. Besides, in extreme environments (e.g., high humidity, salty air, or UV exposure), SCIP panels may degrade over time. This problem could damage the structural integrity, durability, and aesthetic appeal of the SCIP panels.

Slump Retention

By delaying the hydration of the cement, Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer effectively limits the heating up and thus keeps the concrete fluid easy to pump into the SCIP panel structure. Noticeably, this process has no effect on the concrete’s final strength.

Strength Development

Polycarboxylate Superplasticizer could accelerate the early strength development of the concrete. It also enhances the compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete, making SCIP panels more resistant to mechanical stresses and impacts.

Improvement At A Low Dosage

Typically used at 0.1% to 0.3% by weight of cement, PCE could save 3kg of concrete per cubic meter and increase its 28-day strength by about 5 to 10 MPa.
