Top 5 Benefits of Cellulose Ether in Ceramic Surface Activity

LANDERCOLL Cellulose Ether delivers exceptional performance in ceramic applications through its unique molecular structure and surface-active properties, providing comprehensive solutions for modern ceramic manufacturing processes.

Surface Activity

44-56 dyn/cm HPMC Solution
vs
72 dyn/cm Pure Water

The surface tension of cellulose ether aqueous solutions ranges from 44 to 56 dyn/cm, compared with 72 dyn/cm for pure water. This lower surface tension provides the solution with good surface activity, enabling it to act as an effective suspending and dispersing agent. It enhances the stability and uniform dispersion of ceramic mineral slurries.

<2%

Low Metal Ion Content

As a polysaccharide-based macromolecular polymer, cellulose ether can be completely combusted into carbon dioxide and water. The content of metal ions (mainly sodium ions) is generally below 2%, and it contains almost no multivalent ions such as calcium, magnesium, or iron. Therefore, it introduces minimal impurities to ceramic materials and exerts negligible influence on the crystal structure of ceramics.

3.0 11.0

pH Stability

Stable Range: pH 3.0 - 11.0

The viscosity of cellulose ether aqueous solutions is hardly affected by acidic or alkaline environments and remains stable within a pH range of 3.0-11.0.

Water Retention

Cellulose ether is an efficient water-retaining agent. It has a wide range of applications in ceramics, building materials, and many other fields. An appropriate water retention capacity not only ensures the plasticity of ceramic bodies but can also appropriately increase the porosity of ceramics after sintering.

High-Performance Adhesion

Pure Oxide Ceramics Aluminum Silicate Cordierite Minerals Silicon Carbide (SiC) Silicon Nitride (Si₃N₄)

As a high-performance binder, cellulose ether is suitable for binding pure oxide ceramic raw materials, aluminum silicate mineral raw materials, cordierite mineral raw materials, silicon carbide (SiC), and silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) ceramic raw materials. It is widely used in the adhesion, suspension, and dispersion of building ceramics, sanitary ceramics, domestic ceramics, art ceramics, honeycomb ceramics, and ceramic membrane fields.

85°C

Key Application Points

Temperature Control

Heat water above 85°C for optimal dispersion and uniform distribution throughout the mixture

Thorough Mixing

Ensure uniform dispersion through proper stirring techniques and adequate mixing time

Cooling Process

Add cold water while stirring to achieve complete dissolution and proper consistency

Quality Result

Achieve uniform ceramic glaze or filtration slurry with excellent performance characteristics

Hot-Water Dispersion

Method 1

Add one-third or two-thirds of the required amount of water into a container and heat it above 85°C. Since cellulose ether is insoluble in hot water, it will disperse uniformly during the initial stage. Then, add the remaining amount of cold or ice water to the hot slurry while stirring and allow the mixture to cool.

Solid Powder Mixing

Method 2

Mix cellulose ether powder with ceramic mineral raw material powder to achieve uniform dry dispersion. Then, spray water evenly and knead the mixture thoroughly to form a uniformly dispersed, highly plastic ceramic body.

Organic Solvent Moistening

Method 3

Pre-disperse or moisten cellulose ether with an organic solvent such as ethanol, ethylene glycol, or light mineral oil before adding water to dissolve it.

WATER RETENTION ANALYSIS

Factors Affecting the Water Retention Performance of Cellulose Ethers

Cellulose ethers have excellent adhesion and water retention properties for ceramic mineral raw materials. Maintaining a certain level of moisture allows the ceramic body to maintain stable and good plasticity during the processing and shaping process. The level of water retention capacity affects the durability of the plasticity of the ceramic body, but an excessively high water retention can also cause excessive shrinkage of the body during the drying process.

Key Performance Factors

Excellent Adhesion

Strong bonding properties with ceramic mineral raw materials ensure structural integrity

Stable Plasticity

Maintains consistent workability throughout processing and shaping operations

Moisture Control

Optimal water retention prevents excessive shrinkage during drying process

Enhanced Durability

Long-lasting performance characteristics throughout the ceramic production cycle
