Sustained Release Drugs and Controlled Release Drugs

Sustained-release (SR) and controlled-release (CR) formulations are both intended to deliver medication into the body over a prolonged duration, minimizing the frequency of dosing and ensuring more stable drug concentrations in the bloodstream. Despite their similarities, there are clear distinctions between these two types of formulations

Sustained-Release (SR) Preparations

Sustained release technology is designed to slowly release a substance at a specific rate, enabling the drug to be administered over a longer duration. This method is ideal for medications that are quickly metabolized and rapidly removed from the body after being taken.

Controlled-Release (CR) Preparations

Controlled release technology is designed to release drugs at a predictable and carefully programmed rate, ensuring optimal serum-drug concentrations. This dosage form improves the safety, efficacy, reliability, and convenience of drug therapy, providing more consistent treatment outcomes and enhancing patient adherence.

01.

Pharmaceutical Grade HPMC

Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) is a versatile pharmaceutical excipient. It functions as a thickener, dispersant, emulsifier, and film-forming agent. When used as a film coating and binder, it boosts the dissolution rate of drugs. It also acts as a suspension aid and is utilized in ophthalmic preparations.

HPMC manages drug release and distribution, enhancing therapeutic outcomes and patient satisfaction.

02.

Pharmaceutical Grade EC

Ethyl Cellulose, which doesn’t dissolve in water but does in organic solvents, is used to strengthen tablets and minimize friability. It also improves the appearance of tablets and masks their taste.

Additionally, it protects water-sensitive medications and aids in creating sustained-release formulations.

03.

Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC)

Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a tasteless, insoluble cellulose used for its high drug loading, adhesion, and tablet compression properties. It serves as a filler, binder, and disintegrant in pharmaceuticals due to its good fluidity.

LANDU MCC is used as a pharmaceutical excipient, non-caloric food additive, and chromatography filler. It also functions as a carrier for dyes, reinforcing filler, and emulsifier in various industries.

04.

Hydroxypropyl Starch Ether (HPS)

LANDU HPS product serves as an outstanding thickener and water retention agent, boosting product performance with a small amount. It is stable in both acidic and alkaline environments, has a lower gelatinization temperature than regular starch, and maintains stable viscosity despite temperature fluctuations.

Moreover, etherified starch provides enhanced freeze-thaw stability and clarity, making it suitable for diverse applications.

05.

Low Substitue Hydroxypropyl Cellulose

Low-substituted Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (L-HPC) is a non-ionic, white or crystalline powder created by reacting alkali cellulose with propylene oxide. It is insoluble in water and organic solvents like acetone and ethanol, but it can swell rapidly in water. The degree of swelling varies depending on the hydroxypropyl content.

L-HPC is unaffected by the pH levels of gastrointestinal fluids, making it an ideal additive for tablet production. It is specifically designed to enhance the manufacturing process of tablets.

06.

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Phthalate

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Phthalate (HPMC-P) is a white or off-white granular solid that is tasteless. It serves as an enteric coating material with excellent resistance to gastric acid and is insoluble at a pH of 5.0-5.5.

Primarily used in tablets and granules, it also finds applications in aquaculture, biotechnology, and various other industries.

07.

Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose Acetate Succinate (HPMCAS)

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Acetate Succinate (HPMCAS) is a combination of HPMC acetate and succinic acid. It is a tasteless, white to light yellow powder or granule, mainly utilized for enteric coatings.

This enteric coating material forms effective films without requiring a plasticizer. It dissolves efficiently in the upper small intestine (duodenum), thereby improving drug absorption in the small intestine.

08.

Sodium CarboxyMethylCellulose(CMC)

Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose is a key cellulose ether created through the chemical alteration of natural fibers. It is a polyanionic substance that dissolves well in both cold and hot water.

This compound has distinctive and beneficial physical and chemical properties, including emulsifying capabilities, stability, decay resistance, and being safe for physiological use. It is extensively used as a derivative of natural macromolecules.
