Il calcestruzzo perde acqua in superficie prima della completa maturazione, mentre all'interno rimane in uno stato plastico stabile. Questa differenza crea una tensione di trazione sulla superficie. Una volta che la sollecitazione cresce fino a superare lo sforzo di trazione, si formano delle fessure. A causa del basso rapporto acqua\/gel, il calcestruzzo ad alte prestazioni potrebbe avere una maggiore resistenza nella fase iniziale e una pi\u00f9 rapida perdita di acqua. L'umidit\u00e0 relativa del sistema di pori \u00e8 inferiore all'80%.
